AAC All Aluminum Conductor

Product Description:

Consisting of one or more strands of 1350 aluminum alloy wire, AAC is a flexible and relatively lightweight conductor.  Compared to the similar ACSR, a steel reinforced aluminum conductor, this conductor provides more versatility and mobility while ACSR provides a higher level of conductor strength. 

Applications:

It can be used in low and medium voltage overhead lines. It’s commonly used in urban areas because of its ability to carry significant voltages over short distances.  The long-lasting, corrosion resistant qualities of aluminum make this conductor a popular choice for use in coastal areas as well as for use in the railway and subway industries.  Shipyards and offshore construction sites benefit from the conductor’s durability.  This conductor can be used for most overhead transmission duties when conductor strength is not a factor.  The conductor can also be used for primary and secondary distribution applications.

Specifications:

All Aluminum Conductor meets or exceeds the specifications set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials:

• B-230 for Aluminum Wire and 1350-H19 grade aluminum for Electrical Purposes.
• B-231 standards, calculated by using the wire’s nominal diameter and minimum average strength for Aluminum Conductors and Concentric-Lay-Stranded categories.

Construction:

• Conductors

– AAC is constructed of one or more aluminum alloy 1350-H19 wires.  Bare EC grade strands are hard drawn wrapped around a central wire.

• Stranding

– Helically stranded.

AAC All Aluminum Conductor cable gives solid performance in overhead transmission and distribution applications. AAC conductors are utilized as a part of line designs that don't require the strength of ACSR type conductors, while still expanding current conveying limit. 

Concentric lay stranded Aluminum Conductors are created from one or more strands of hard drawn 1350-H19 aluminum wires. AAC All Aluminum Conductors are frequently used as low, medium and high voltage overhead lines. AAC has a decent erosion resistance because it is made ONLY from aluminum wires.  It has high value due to the low price, minimum conductivity of 61.2%, IACS low breaking quality and high creep values. AAC has the most noteworthy conductivity per weight among all uncovered overhead conductors. 

AAC has seen broad use in urban zones where runs are generally short yet high conductivity is required. The runs need to be short to use AAC because it lacks the reinforcement strands that are built into other cables like the ACSR.  The brilliant erosion resistance of aluminum has made AAC a conductor of choice in all waterfront regions. Due to its generally poor strength to weight proportion, AAC had limited use in transmission lines and rural distribution because of the long spans that are typical in these situations.

Technical Standards:

B-230: aluminum 1350-H19, extra hard, round wire for electrical purposes. The aluminum wire shall be made from drawing stock and shall be free of brittleness as evidenced by its ability to be coiled or looped around its own diameter with or without a mandrel.

B-231: aluminum 1350-H19, 1350-H16 or -H26, 1350-H14 or -H24, and 1350-H142 or -H242, bare concentric-lay-stranded conductors constructed with a straight round central wire surrounded by one or more layers of helically layered wires.

B-400: aluminum1350-H19, 1350-H16 or -H26, 1350-H14 or -H24, and 1350-H142 or -H242 bare compact-round concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round or shaped wires for use as uninsulated electric conductors or in covered or insulated electrical conductors.
