Steel wire armoured xlpe cable, commonly abbreviated as SWA armoured Cable, is a hard-wearing power cable designed for the supply of mains electricity. It is one of a number of armoured electrical cables – which include 11kV cable and 33kV cable – and is found in underground systems, power networks and cable ducting.
The typical construction of an swa armoured cable can be broken down as follows:
- Conductor: consists of plain stranded copper (cables are classified to indicate the degree of flexibility. Class 2 refers to rigid stranded copper conductors as stipulated by British Standard BS EN 60228:2005)
- Insulation: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is used in a number of power cables including BS5467 cable because it has good water resistance and excellent electrical properties. Insulation in cables like SWA armoured xlpe cable BS5467 ensures that conductors and other metal substances do not come into contact with each other.
- Bedding: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bedding is used to provide a protective boundary between inner and outer layers of the xlpe cable .
- Armour: Steel wire armour provides mechanical protection, which means the cable can withstand higher stresses, be buried directly and used in external or underground projects. The armouring is normally connected to earth and can sometimes be used as the circuit protective conductor ("earth wire") for the equipment supplied by cable.
- Sheath: a black PVC sheath holds all components of the cable together and provides additional protection from external stresses.
FAQ:
1. Why use swa armoured cable?
With its steel wire armour, SWA armoured cable is particularly useful in external or underground projects. As well as providing effective mechanical protection, the armour enables it to withstand higher pulling loads.
SWA’s XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation is resistant to a wide range of chemicals and has good thermal stability.
Steel Wire Armoured BS5467 Cable is a robust and hard-wearing power cable with copper conductors, XLPE insulation, steel wire armour and a black PVC sheath. It is designed for the supply of mains electricity – for power networks, underground systems and in cable ducting – and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
2. Which industries use swa armoured cable?
The versatile steel wire armoured BS5467 Cable is commonly used across a whole range of industries including building and construction, and rail and transport. The armoured mains cable is also supplied for transmission, distribution and power networks as well as automation and process control systems.
3. What is the difference between AWA and swa armoured cable?
Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA) is used in single core cable because it is non-magnetic. When an electric current passes through a cable it produces a magnetic field (the higher the voltage the bigger the field). The magnetic field will induce an electric current in steel armour (eddy currents), which can cause overheating in AC systems. The non-magnetic aluminium armour prevents this from happening. Both AWA and Steel wire armoured cables meet the requirements of BS5467.
4. When would I need to use Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) Steel wire armoured cable (BS6724)?
The Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) swa armoured cable is recommended for use in public areas. When exposed to fire, the LS0H sheath emits very low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission). LS0H may also be referred to as LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free), 0HLS (Zero Halogen Low Smoke), LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) or HFFR (Halogen Free Flame Retardant).
5. Can the wire armouring be used as an earth?
The wire armouring is not advised to be used as an earth. Although it is possible on cable up to a certain size, it should only be used as an additional earth. The armour should, however always be earthed at the supply end to ensure that it cannot become a live cable if the cable is severed or if a fault develops within the cable.

4. XLPE Cable Using properties
1) Rated voltage U0/U is 0.6/1kV.
2) Maximum continuous operating temperature requirements:
——For PE and PVC, 70°C.
——For XLPE, 90°C.
3) Installation requirements:
——Laying temperature shall not be less than -20°C.
——Minimum bending radius:
For that whose diameter is less than 25mm, shall be 4 times cable outer diameter.
For that whose diameter is equal to or greater than 25mm, shall be 6 times cable outer diameter.
——It should be considered to keep a certain distance between cables and trees during installation. Touch, between cables and trees, is allowable only for short time during operation.
