Frequently Asked Questions – SER copper cable

1. What is the difference between Aluminum SER and SEU wires?

Both SER and SEU are type SE or Service Entrance cables which can come as a single conductor or multi-conductors used mainly for services. SER cable comes with a reinforcement tape while you can find an overall reinforcement and neutral tape which is applied concentrically in SEU. SER can be used at 600V while SEU is used at 600V and under 600V.  SER usually comes with a color-coded XLPE lining.

2. When do you use Copper SER cables?

They can be used anywhere SE cables are permitted and they have to be installed in accordance with NEC® Article 230.  They can be used for service conductors, branch circuits and feeders for residential purposes. They can also be used for small commercial purposes.

3. What is the advantage of using SER rather than SEU?

Both cables can be used for similar purposes, but when you use SER, you can actually cut down on your installation time. When you use SEU cables, you will have to untwist the neutral wires before you terminate the conductors and then you will have to twist them back again for termination. This is not required for Type SER Aluminum cables and so it is a much preferred option.

4. Is there a difference between Aluminum SER and Copper SER?

Yes, there is. Aluminum SER is made of 8000 alloy series, which makes it more flexible than Copper SER. It can be quite a task to bend Copper SER cables, especially when you have to bend them tightly as the copper gauge will be very large. Also aluminum is much easier to work with for service feeders and the price of aluminum is much less than copper.

5. How is the Aluminum SER constructed?

The conductors are made of 8000 series alloy that are compact and stranded.  The conductors have a sunlight resistant insulation, which can be of two types – XHHW-2 or THHN/THWN-2.  The conductors have a reinforcement tape wrapped around them, which strengthens them and gives uniform conformity. The gray outer jacket is made of PVC or polyvinyl chloride, which is also resistant to sunlight. You can find SER cables on the market in 2-4 phase conductors along with a bare neutral.

6. What are the specifications of Copper SER cables?

SER cable is RoHS obedient and Lead Free. It is in accordance with UL standard 83 (for THHN/THWN-2), 84 (for XHHW-2) and 854.   It also complies with Federal Specification A-A-59544 and NEC/NFPA 70.

Copper SER cable is primarily used as panel feeder in multiple unit dwellings and for branch circuits. Maximum operating temperature is not to exceed 90°C in wet locations. Voltage rating is 600 volts.

Conductors:

Copper SER cable has a Uncoated copper per ASTM-B3, ASTM-B8, and ASTM-B787

  • Type THHN conductors
  • Black PVC (polyvinyl chloride), rated to 90°C in wet or dry locations
  • Jacketed with black nylon (polyamide)
  • One phase conductor has a red stripe on its insulation surface for easy polarity identification
Neutral Conductor

  • Jacketed with white nylon (polyamide) 
Equipment Ground Conductor
  • Bare stranded copper conductor.

 

Assembly:

Insulated and bare conductors are twisted together.
Glass-reinforced tape is applied over conductors.

Insulation:

Copper SER cable has a type XHHW-2 cross linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation. The conductors are cabled together with a bare copper ground and covered with a reinforced binder tape. For color code, see table B in technical section.

Jacket:

Copper SER cable has a gray sunlight resistance polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jacket.

Aluminum SER / SEU Cable Applications:

Assembly – Insulated conductors are cabled with the bare ground wire. A flame retardant fiberglass reinforced binder tape assembles the core in a circular configuration.
